Swimming integrated unit year 5
Central Idea: Humans use their knowledge of scientific principles Key concept: Function, Change, Reflection Related Concepts: Function: • Science strand: Forces and energy • Related Concepts: force, properties, energy Change: • Science strands: Forces and energy & Materials and matter • Related concepts: physics, force, discovery, properties Reflection: • Science strands: Forces and energy & Materials and matter • Related concepts: innovation What lines of inquiry will define the central idea Lines of inquiry: Discovering scientific principles (change) • Scientific misconceptions (reflection) • Humans apply the laws of motion in diverse ways (function). In swimming I decided to begin the unit by quick discussion about what discoveries and inventions do you know in swimming? What is the positive impact of that invention in swimming? What misconceptions you found in swimming? What happens when people have scientific misconceptions? I then instructed students to watch a video about inventions and misconceptions in tech swimming suit. Students then give a feedback on a paper and think about ideas they can do to help people can swim fast. Learning Experiences (Weeks 2-5) Flotation experiments Students work in groups of three to do some experiments:
Students worked in pairs in a lane, one student would wear the fins and the other went without fins. Instead of racing against one another, they were to count the number of kicks performed as they swam to the end (25m). We finished with a final discussion about the students general observations: students could kick harder and glide for longer with fins on. We continued with hands paddle experiments same as previous experiment students would wear a hand paddle and pull buoys on their legs. They then performed freestyle arm pull 25m with hand paddle on and without hand paddle. Some students were failed to paddling since they never used this before. They continue count the number of strokes they did in 25m. It was clearly that the most efficient was with hand paddle. Written Assessment Instead of a swimming session this week, the students completed their written reflection/assessment task. This focused on the learning experiences, attitudes/learner profiles, personal likes/dislikes and an explanation of the experiments undertaken to help demonstrate the students understanding of the central idea.

How We Express Ourselves - A variety sign and symbol at swimming pool.
Central Idea: People create a variety of systems to communicate with others. Key Concepts: Form, Function, Connection. What lines of inquiry: • Forms of communication (form) • Signs and symbols (function) • Specialized systems of communication (connection). The first session started by students observing, what sign and symbol they can find around the swimming pool. Then they use they knowledge to discuss in a group. Following by developing they swimming freestyle skills. Over the last three weeks each group of students described to their friends on what and why the sign is stand for. Students have experienced and understood that everyone are responsible to follow the rules for their own safety during swimming. Our final discussion started by students completed some questions for reflections and following with “golden time”. While it was short unit, but I can see some impact on the students as they were aware of how they behavior during swimming activity. We agree that swimming is an important skill to learn for life. At ACG School Jakarta, we have swimming lesson for Kindy to Secondary students as part of our curriculum. Each student not only develops their water confidence and water safety, but also improves all four swimming strokes and experiences various fun water activities, such as water polo, rafting race, water volleyball, finding Dory, sponge attack and many more. Students who are talented and interested in continuing their swimming skills will also have an opportunity to improve their competitive swimming skills on the ACG School Jakarta swim team. Mr. David and Mr. Dhani will work together to help our students achieve their full potential in a fun way.
