Year 3 (Unit 1) - How we express ourselves
Year 3 PE classes began the year by inquiring into the systems of communication including symbols. The students also performed the locomotor and manipulation skills and explored communication skills used in sports.
Central Idea
People create a variety of systems to communicate with others.
Lines of Inquiry:
1. Forms of communication (form)
2. Signs and symbols (function)
3. Specialized systems of communication (connection).
At the beginning of the lesson, students discussed about the meaning of communication and the kinds of communication used by PE teachers or in specific sports. The purpose of the discussion was to gain a deeper understanding on the concept of communication used in sports. The whistle, flags and hand-signs are the common communication systems used in PE and sports.
Students practised long jump, targeted throw and created the hand signs to communicate to others (student and teacher).
